Music at New Hanover

Music is an important part in the life of the congregation. In recognition of our Lutheran heritage and the significance music plays in our worship services, the following music ministry opportunities are available for adults and children. New members are always welcome!

Cherub Choir
Ages 3 ½ to Grade 2. This beginning choir sings at approximately eight services each year at 10:15 services as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. Rehearsals are held Wednesday nights in the choir room during the school year from 6:00 -6:30. Cherub Choir members work on developing singing skills while deepening their faith as they learn anthems, hymns, and liturgy. The rehearsals are fast paced and fun!

Junior Choir
Grades 3-6. Rehearsals are held Wednesday nights at 6:30 – 7:00 during the school year. These half hour rehearsals are packed with learning as choir member prepare anthems, liturgy, and hymns for services. Singers also work on developing vocal technique, following a conductor, and learning to read choral music. This choir sings about eight times a year, usually at the 10:15 service, as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Youth Choir
Grades 7-12. Rehearsals are held in the choir room on Sunday mornings from 8:45 - 9:05 during the school year. The Youth Choir sings once a month and for special services including Thanksgiving and Christmas. Youth Choir members also have the opportunity to play percussion instruments for a variety of choir anthems during the year.

Sanctuary Choir

Handbell Choir
For all adults middle school and older. This choir plays three octaves (36 notes) of bells and four octaves of handchimes. Once a month the choir plays at both the 7:45 and 10:15 services. The Handbell Choir practices Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30.

Other Musical Opportunities
Beyond vocal choirs, persons with special singing or instrumental skills can present solo, duet, and small ensemble music throughout the year. Experienced singers can also serve as a cantor. The cantor sings the Kyrie (Lord have mercy) for our services.
